Web Map Service WMS

LGIA offers a new service – subscription of the geospatial information, using information system web services (WMS services)

Web Map Services (WMS) is the standart protocol, which is used to transmit in the internet geographical map images, generated by the map servers, using data from the GIS databases
Specification was worked out and first time published in year 1999 and the author of the specification is Open Geospatial Consortium
WMS last version is 1.3.0. and it is published on 20 January, 2004, but revised and corrected on 26 October, 2010
More information is available in the homepage of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)

WMS provide client with direct connection to Data ceaper databse
WMS is possible to add as a background map for the professional GIS and CAD softwares – ESRI ArcGIS, Bentley Map v8i, Intergraph Geomedia, MapInfo and others, as well WMS can be used also with open source free programs like QGIS, GRASS GIS, ProGIS, OpenJUMP and other
Also it is possible to add WMS in map publication browsers as a separate layers

If there is not nesessity for functionality to switch on-off WMS data leyers and no need for most actual data information, there is oportunity to use another tipe of WMS - Web Map Tile Service (WMTS)

Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) is a standard protocol for serving pre-rendered georeferenced map tiles over the Internet
The specification was developed and first published by the Open Geospatial Consortium in 2010
Due to the fact, that on user quary map publishing server returnes predefined image tiles and server don’t have to provide database object vizualization, WMTS service performance is 3 to 5 times faster than WMS
Further information about WMTS in Open Geospatial Consortium homepage
OGC published WMTS example

LGIA prepare WMTS services for geospatial basic data in which changes are not often introduced
WMST service for topographic map in scale 1:10 000 is being prepared simultaneously with data changes in LGIA Map Browser

Agency offers following WMS services:

Metadata

WMS services of the topographical charts, maps and overview maps are shown in their scale row range. For example, the topographic map, scale 1:10 000 is viewable in scales from 1:5000 (10000/2) up to 1:20 000 (10000 x 2)
This limitation is due to the fact that at the detailed scales will be too large amount of visualized objects, thus the service becomes very slow

WMS is a paid service - pricing is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 421 of 25th July, 2017 "Regulations regarding the price list of premium public services provided by Latvian Geospatial Information Agency" (available only in Latvian)
