Geographical Names Database

Records are entered, maintained and updated in the database regarding geographical names (geographical names or toponyms) and the corresponding geographical objects, both natural and man-made.
The information in the database comprises the entire territory of Latvia, as well as the frontier areas of the neighbouring countries
As of 1 January 2011, 128 323 names of 103 318 geographical objects were stored in the Geographical Names Database

The public version of the Geographical Names Database (6th edition) has now been published

It contains the following details about the geographical name and the corresponding geographical object:
  • preferred name or main name (e.g. Vētrasmuiža)
  • official name (name in the Address Classifier, e.g. Vētras)
  • other names (e.g. Imantas)
  • type of geographical object (e.g. village)
  • administrative or territorial affiliation (e.g. Svēte parish, Jelgava region, formerly Jelgava district)
  • numerical characteristics (e.g. population 30 as of 05.10.2006)
  • geographical and right-angle co-ordinates (the object can be viewed on a 1:50,000 scale map)
  • sheet number and name of the 1:50,000 scale map on which the object is located (e.g. 3242 ELEJA)

  • a description of the geographical object and its name (currently unavailable)
  • notes regarding the pronunciation of the geographical name (in cases of potential ambiguity, e.g. Bojas [uo])
  • etc.
Database data may be useful for the following:
  • preparation and inspection of maps
  • approval of official names, proper selection and use of names
  • preparation of various data sets and informational material
  • etc.
